Profile of the role

The Parish Footpath Officer (PFO) role is to assist in the surveying, maintenance and improvement of the Public Rights of Way (PROW) network within an allocated area.

The essential elements of the role are to:

Attend the PFO Induction training course, and additional training as and when necessary.

Commit a minimum of 12 days a year to the role.

Attend PFO meetings for the purpose of keeping up to date with the PROW team and sharing best practice.

Carry out regular surveys of public rights of way in your allocated parish in accordance to the PROW Survey protocols.

Carry out basic clearance of vegetation (e.g. around signposts, waymark posts, stiles, gates etc.) using hand tools.

Inform the PROW inspector of any issues that you cannot easily fix yourself or are of a particular safety concern.

Carry out way-marking in accordance with the way-marking protocols.

Read and adhere to all Risk Assessments and Health and Safety procedures relating to the role provided by the PROW team in accordance with Herefordshire Council (HCC) guidance.

Follow all guidance issued in the Volunteer Handbook.

Report issues on the network via the HCC website following the ‘reporting an issue’ protocols and include any remedial work carried out.

Where appropriate work with other PROW volunteers, partner organisations, affiliated volunteer groups and contractors to undertake tasks approved by the PROW Team.

Liaise with your Parish Council to exchange information and to keep them informed of your activities, perhaps through a regular report to Council meetings.

Optional Duties

Carry out more extensive vegetation clearance (strimming), practical maintenance or improvements. (Competency training in the use of strimmers is required)

Provide information and advice to landowners about PROW on their land and how you and HCC might be able to assist, Training to be provided.

Take part in volunteer work parties.

Assist with promotion of PROW at events, village fairs etc.
