The ‘Big Switch Off on Sunday 23rd February 2025’ is designed to help the aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 (Climate change – Herefordshire Council).
Unnecessary and obtrusive lighting wastes energy, adds to electricity bills and releases more carbon emissions into the atmosphere. Artificial light at night is also harmful to wildlife and interferes with our sleep patterns which can affect our long-term health.
This event is a highly visible act to do something positive to save carbon, energy and money. It also helps to reverse the severe decline of insects and other night-time pollinators. These species are important for maintaining our food security.
