THE ALMA SANTA RUN’ will be held this year on SUNDAY, 8th DECEMBER starting at 12:30pm. Runners will, of course, compete in their Father Christmas outfits.

The SANTA RUN follows a 1.8 mile circular course starting and finishing at The Alma Inn. The route takes the fun runners out past the church and down along The Line returning via Linton Hill ridge. All junctions are clearly signposted and marshalled by volunteers. The course can be run, jogged or, indeed, walked. Whilst accessible to wheelchairs, the route follows public roads open to traffic at all times.

The event will again be FREE to enter but with donations going to local charity. Competitors will not be officially timed. The emphasis is  fun and exercise. Our oldest entrant last year was in his 80s.

Last year we estimated we might see between 25 and 50 runners but on a fine December day many more turned up. Our numbers were also swelled by family pets including two Shetland ponies! Hopefully, our second Santa Run will be equally successful. The mass start of Santas is quite a spectacle for spectators and runners alike.

LITTER PICK – Sat 7th December with VoLT.

The constant plague of litter continues.
At the Spring clean up on the 6th of April, volunteers collected 12 full black bags of rubbish plus sundry items too large for a bag (see photo 1) . Since then we have a number of “litter haters” who selflessly go out and collect litter for the community. Roger Davies has filled 8 since the litter pick and  we have filled 4 bags (photo 2) with detritus found between Shutton and Jays Green in the last 3 months !  It is worth noting that this is not any rubbish, it is M&S rubbish!  I know that there are other folk who spontaneously collect litter. Please accept all our thanks who pick in the parish !
VoLT are organising another community littler pick for Saturday 7th December meeting at The Alma at 10.00 am.  We are concerned about everyone’s health and safety at the events and so
  • will issue everyone with hi-vis jackets 
  • will provide litter pickers, bags and gloves
  • would ask that all children are accompanied by an adult
  • will ask everyone reads and signs H&S guidance before picking ( we nearly had an accident at the last event)
VoLT is working with Hereford CC to get approved signage installed in litter hot spots around the village, to see if we can dissuade people from dropping litter. However the process is protracted due to wording / sighting of signs etc, having to be approved by the DoT and well as HCC !
There is a feeling that the majority of litter comes from people stopping to eat and drink and who are passing through from the A40 to the M50.  To mis-quote the bard, “a plague on all their houses” !

Traffic control lights on the B4215 Trioscape to Highnam.

Message from the Newent Roads Team: 
Severn Trent have advised that there are likely to be traffic control lights on the B4215 over the next few weeks, to undertake connection work with the new main that has been laid between Trioscape and Highnam, as follows:
ST will be putting up two-way traffic lights on the B4215 at the most northern point of the works, near Trioscape, for three days from tomorrow (Wednesday 6thNovember) to connect the newly installed main to the existing main.
ST are planning to transfer other services from the existing main to the newly installed main in the coming weeks. They will work south from Tibberton towards Two Mile Lane, Highnam, which probably means more traffic controls as they progress.

Holme Lacy Causeway Closures 11 to 22 November

Monday, 11 November 2019 to (and including) Friday, 22 November 2019

The recent flooding has further eroded the carriageway along the Causeway, just out of Holme Lacy village and therefore we need to undertake emergency works.

These emergency works will start next Monday, 11 November 2019 for a period of two weeks ending Friday, 22 November 2019.

  • Starting on Monday, 11 November, there will be a road closure in place each day between 09.30 hours and 15.30 hours, Monday to Friday.
  • Outside of the above hours, two-way traffic lights will be in operation.
  • Over the weekend of 16/17 November 2019, two-way traffic lights will be in operation.

The programme of works will include haunching, installing rock armor and new fencing and then resurfacing is scheduled from Wednesday, 20 November to (and including) Friday, 22 November … weather permitting J

Over the past few months Herefordshire Green Network (HGN) has been developing a process to support the work of Herefordshire’s parish/town councils, as they begin to respond to the growing number of declarations of a climate emergency around the county.

Under the banner of The Great Collaboration, our aims are:

  1. To support parish/town and county councillors and their communities embrace the opportunity created by Herefordshire Council’s and/or their own Declaration of a Climate Emergency.
  2. To encourage a wider understanding of carbon calculating and the Zero Carbon Britain model, and how these might be applied in Herefordshire.
  3. To develop shared, locally-relevant, practical solutions – through discussion, information and inspiration – in response to Herefordshire’s aspiration to be carbon neutral by 2030.

The Great Collaboration team has developed two consecutive workshops which provide an opportunity for councillors to talk with local experts about the implications of becoming a zero carbon community. It is our intention that this process will be the beginning of an ongoing dialogue within local communities, helping to facilitate targeted, practical solutions in order to meet Herefordshire’s zero carbon target.

We propose to work with parish/town councillors and county councillors across Herefordshire, aiming to create dialogue throughout local communities.

We are already working with a number of local councils on this, and events will be held around the county. Councillors and clerks are able to book into whichever event is most convenient for them.

We will be holding meetings in Hereford, Bromyard, Ledbury, Leominster and Ross-on-Wye

Decision to review major transport infrastructure projects

Further to the letter sent to you in August where I outlined my decision to pause and review work on the Hereford bypass (part of the Hereford Transport Package) and the Southern link road (part of the South Wye Transport Package), you may be aware that the council’s General Scrutiny Committee met in early September to consider this decision made a number of recommendations.

I have given careful consideration to these recommendations and in response I have published a final decision today that confirms that a review of these two major roads schemes will go ahead however some work will not now be paused. Where a number of assessments and reports had already been started for the Hereford bypass these will now be completed and project development activity already scheduled for the Southern link road will continue subject to funding being available.

The views of residents, commuters and local businesses are very important to us and while we had always planned to consult widely during the review my final decision makes this commitment explicit.

Both the Hereford and South Wye Transport Packages include improvements to walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure in the City and, as in my original decision, work towards the implementation of these will continue subject to funding being available.

As you will be aware, there are many complex issues that must be considered as part of this review into the two road schemes. It is vital that travel, transport and infrastructure developments in Hereford support the economy, help to improve health and wellbeing and make Herefordshire a better place to live, work and visit. We also need to ensure we effectively respond to the climate emergency declared by Herefordshire Council and the Government.

The review will consider alternative options as we look to the long term and towards providing a high quality, integrated and low carbon transport system for the whole of Herefordshire. For example this will include infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians (including safe routes to school), an eastern river crossing, trialling the removal of some traffic signals and options for an electric bus service, improving school bus services and an ultra-light rail system.

The scope of the review is now being considered and a further report setting this out will be prepared for approval before the end of the year. This will be publicly available on the council’s website.
